Typography: Here to Stay or Fad?

Hera ABC shirt

If you’ve been looking around the stores, lately, you’ll have noticed that shirts, skirts, pillows, jewelry, shoes and pants have begun to “say” things. And I’m not talking about your clothing making a statement. I mean, they’re splayed with letters and numbers.

Clearly, it’s supposed to be attractive, cute and desirable. It says the opposite to me. I don’t want pillows on my couches that have the ABC’s and 123’s. Even if I had kids, I’d prefer a pattern that’s attractive and will last. And letters on pants? Come on. Say it with me, “Tacky.”

Sometimes, it’s not so bad, when you can’t immediately tell that it’s made of numbers and letters, but really it’s not attractive. I mean, I like lockets all right, but a bracelet made out of letters? No. I mean, it’s okay for kids. Maybe even for pre-teens, but I don’t like the idea of it for adults. It looks childish and unattractive. Especially the letters on the pants (can’t find a picture, sorry) - that looks especially amateurish and unprofessional.
