The Dreaded Bridesmaid Dress

Twobirds Bridesmaids Dresses

It seems that in light of Katherine Heigl’s newest film, 27 Dresses, bridesmaids dresses everywhere are under intense scrutiny - and for good reason. I mean, any woman who has ever been in a wedding remembers the horror of putting down a couple hundred dollars on the dress, sometimes another fifty on the shoes, then the hair, and that’s not even counting any wedding showers or gifts. And most of the time, that’s for a dress you hate and will never ever wear again - and probably won’t even show anyone.

The worst dress I ever had to wear made me and all the other bridesmaids look like French maids. I’m not joking (we even had to wear long white gloves, I wanted to die). I can’t wear that again, and I paid more than $350 for it. Fortunately, I can (and do) still wear the $50 shoes that went with it.

My friend, Lindsay, is planning her wedding (engaged in November, marrying in March - eek!), and she decided that the only thing she’s concerned about is the color. She’s letting her three bridesmaids choose the style - and even the length - that they want. That way, they can get something unique to them, that they like, will hopefully be able to wear again, and is affordable.

Twobirds is a company that does just what my friend is looking for. Twobirds sells one dress in ten different colors that can be worn in 8 different ways. The dresses have two lengths: floor length ($290) and calf length ($270). The website shows you how to tie the dresses and has ties ($58) so the groomsmen can match the dresses easily.

Although I don’t personally love all of the dress styles, a lot of them are really pretty, and it allows the bridesmaids to wear something they like. Although it doesn’t have the color my friend wants, it’s still a great idea - and well worth considering.

Fashion Trend: Flared Skirts

December 20, 2007 | Leave a Comment

flared satin skirt

Flared skirts are very sexy, and a little bit playful. They’re typically about knee length, and they go great with opaque tights, like what Kate Moss was wearing, and a chunky heel - any heel, really. High-heeled boots will work, too. The skirt’s flare gives you a spring in the midst of the cold winter.

Be sure, though, that if you’re wearing a flared skirt like the one pictured above ($26 at Forever 21 or online at Twelve by Twelve), that you should wear something tighter on top with it. You can’t wear a flared bottom with a large top, or you’ll look frumpy and uneven.

This $280 Binetti mini flared skirt is a very cool combination of tweed and lace. The mini might be hard for some to pull off, especially with the embellishment. This is available at www.net-a-porter.com. Note: though incredibly fashionable, flared skirts will make your butt look big.

‘Tis The Season to Wear Red

 Jennifer Connelly red dress

Red is hot. Red is sexy. Red is also the color of the season - and not just for the holidays. If you want to step out in Fashion this winter, red is your ticket. A woman who wears red oozes sexiness - and it’s not hard to do. The funny thing is a lot of women shy away from red.

We all have our little black dresses - this season, consider a little red dress, like what Jennifer Connelly is wearing in the picture above. Or something like this $168 dress.

Little RED dress

It doesn’t need to be a lot of red, like a red dress or trench coat. It can be something simple, like a red belt, a red purse, red shoes or red jewelry. Red will get the attention of others and diverge it to you. And I’m talking about good attention.

Go red this season.

Dress Like the Stars: Bare One Shoulder

December 10, 2007 | 1 Comment

blue one-shoulder dress

Baring a shoulder is increasingly becoming the substitution for showing cleavage, and it works well for dresses of all types.

Short dresses, like Ginnifer Goodwin’s red holiday dress and Emmy Rossum’s pink dress look sexy and flirtatious, cut off at the knee and showing one shoulder looks great - if the rest of it is simple. Going overboard will take away any goodness this dress has to offer.

Long dresses, like Joy Bryant’s silver dress or Jennifer Lopez’s light pink dress, or her black and embellished Golden Globe dress look great with only one shoulder (especially J-Lo’s - love it), and the definition at the waist. Don’t wear jewelry with this look, or it’s a bit too much.

Tailored dresses, like Eva Longoria’s silver dress or Kate Bosworth’s white cream look elegant and professional, but are still sexy. Accessories are okay with this look, but they should be simple and ladylike.

Jennifer Love Hewitt Covers Southern Beauty

Southern Beauty magazine just launched and I can tell already that I’m going to absolutely love it and so will my mother - in fact, I’m wondering why nobody jumped on the idea to feature exclusive southern hospitality in magazine form before (and I’m not talking ‘Southern Living’ here). In my opinion, this is a magazine that’s long overdue and although I’m not from the South, my mother is certainly a Georgia Peach, while I’ve lived in enough southern states to know how much I miss it - especially these days when heading south for the winter isn’t an option.

Southern Beauty magazine is a lifestyle, a destination, a state-of-mind and a fresh, reliable voice in beauty - all contained in one exquisite, reader-friendly package - and with Texas born beauty Jennifer Love Hewitt on the cover, you don’t need a plane ticket to get there.

Hilary Duff: Comfortable In Her Own Skin

December 8, 2007 | 1 Comment

Hilary Duff recently had a sit down with Access Hollywood’s Maria Menounos about all things Duff, including body images and weight issues. Back in the day, when she was younger, the actress says she struggled through some hard times, but the older she’s become, the more comfortable she is in her own skin:

“They said things before, you know like, ‘Oh my gosh! She’s gained weight!’ And then I lose weight and then it’s, ‘Oh my god, she has lost too much weight!’”

Hilary says these days she keeps in shape by doing Pilates, but she isn’t much of a strenuous workout type of gal:

“I work with a Pilates trainer. I am so bad at exercising outside of Pilates. It’s just not fun, it’s like I just can’t make myself go.”

Linzi Stoppard Looks Delicious!

Violinist Linzi Stoppard looks delicious in this red and white strapless mini made of Swarovski crystals and Lindt Chocolate’s Lindor Balls. The shoot took place in London, where it was no doubt a bit chilly to be dressed in such fashion, but had it been warm, the chocolate would have melted!

Tyra’s All Wrinkled

When I first saw these shots of Tyra attending the All-Star Tribute Honoring Everyday Heroes at the American Museum of Natural History on December 6th in New York, I thought, “Wow - she looks fantastic!” but on closer inspection, I noticed that while the top half of her dress looked great, the skirt looks all wrinkled - like she pulled it out of a bag or suitcase and just threw it on. The dress itself is really beautiful, but it would have looked so much better if she would have sent it out before putting it on. Her jewely is magnificent (love the earrings and bracelets!) and all in all, I think she does look fantastic - the wrinkly dress skirt just bothers me a little bit.

Tiffany Trump: The Next Heidi Klum?

December 7, 2007 | 1 Comment

Rumor has it that Donald Trump’s youngest daughter, 14 year old Tiffany (her mom is Marla Maples), has an eye for fashion and design and just may - instead of following in her father’s footsteps - follow in the steps of Vera Wang or Heidi Klum, instead.

According to OK! magazine, the little miss has been interested in fashion and putting things together since she was a tiny tot.

Says mom, Marla:

“She loves designing. She’s always been playing with fabrics and putting things together since she was 3 years old. She’s really talking about that. She said, ‘Mommy, we have to decide which fashion school.’ I’m like, ‘Thank you for making it easier! If you’re clear about that, we’ll do it.’”

The two were on hand to attend the Fulcage/Single Mom Foundation Charity event, which is co-founded by Weston Cage, the son of actor Nicolas Cage and co-founder of the Fulcage clothing line. The proceeds of the event went to the Single Mom Foundation.

Shop Your NYC Favorites at Found4Less

Found4Less has become one of my newest favorite websites.  With its local emphasis on NYC bargains, the recently launched Found4Less.com is awesome.  It gives fashion-conscious New Yorkers on a budget a new way of shopping and although I’m not in New York (or anywhere near the East Coast for that matter), it’s such a fun place to browse for bargains, get the latest scoop on trends, tips and tricks, that you can visit no matter where you live!

Mirela Gluck, who co-founded Found4Less and who is also a huge ”Sex and the City” fan, wondered just why it was that none of her friends had a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes, awesome handbags or the perfect (and affordable) little black dress. With a little work, she set out to change things and the result of her efforts is Found4Less.com, a web site that provides comparison shopping, product advice, information on affordable places and the latest sale locations for New Yorkers and visitors to the Big Apple.

Besides the latest NYC sales, the site also offers up advice and timely information on everything from shoes, jewelry and clothing to beauty and gadgets.

To see what expert advice and bargains await you (no matter where you live!), visit the website at Found4Less.com.
