Eww… Greasy Hair

Brandon “Greasy Bear” Davis

Okay, so it’s happened to everybody. You know, you wake up late, and you don’t have time to wash it, or you put too much styling product in it and you don’t realize it, or whatever.

However, that doesn’t make it okay, just understandable. The thing about caring for your hair is it’s important for the rest of you. Really oily, greasy hair doesn’t just look gross, it feels gross and looks dirty. It can also cause breakouts - no matter how old you are.  The same goes for over-styled sticky hair. Use the right amount, so it does what you want it to do, but still looks acceptable.

On the other hand, you’re really okay until it’s so bad not even professional stylists will touch it, and you can really go for a day or two before it’s that bad. “Greasy Bear” Brandon Davis recently had that problem. Eww.

The Boot: Important Fall Fashion Accessory

November 15, 2007 | Leave a Comment

Fall’s new look includes the boot. If you’ve looked around shoe stores or department stores lately, I’m sure you’ve seen them. I’m talking about the ankle boot, the flat boot, and the high-heeled stiletto boot.

Evidently, a lot of people are picking out their boot before they pick out their coat so they can be sure they match. Here are some of the three uber-cool boots available right now.

The Posh Spice-like Ankle Boot: Sleek, gorgeous and sexy:

Ankle boot            laced-up ankle boot

The J-Lo-esque Platform Toe-Box Look. Available in white, black, brown - and crazy colors like cobalt blue:

Cream Stiletto boot              black pleather (?) stiletto boot

High, Flat Boots That Go Over the Knee. Word to the wise: if you’re wearing these, make sure that if you’re showing a lot of skin you’re also wearing tights:

flat brown thigh-high boots

One boot that is NOT in (and should never be in):

Are You Wearing the Right Size Bra?

November 14, 2007 | Leave a Comment

 White lace bra

My roommate came home yesterday and told me that she’d heard about Oprah doing a show on how most women are wearing the wrong bra size. That got me thinking about if women really know how to find out what bra they should be wearing.

A few ways to know you’re bra size is incorrect:

  1. Back fat falling over the edge of the bra
  2. Breasts spilling over the cups (I know that wonder bras push them up, but they shouldn’t be falling out)
  3. Pinching wires
  4. Falling straps - or straps that pinch
  5. Dimpling cups

Evidently, about 70-85 percent of women are wearing the wrong bra size. Your bra should be comfortable, sitting under your breast and resting on your chest. A bra that fits right will be comfortable - even if you have to go up (or down) a bra size.

So, how do you find the right bra size? It’s not really that hard. You only need two measurements

  1. The underbust measurement (measuring under your bust)
  2. The overbust measurement (measuring the fullest part of your bust)

Now, take your underbust measurement (UM) and, if it’s an even number of inches, add 4 to that number. If it’s an odd number of inches, add five to that number.

Now, take your Overbust Measurement (OM) to determine your bra size.

If the bra size is the same as the OM number, you’re an A.  1 inch more gives you a B, 2 inches more gives you a C, 3 inches more gives you a D, 4 inches more gives you a DD, 5 inches m ore gives you an F, and so on.

So, here’s an example:

UM=32 + 4inches = Bra size 36

OM=40. 40-36 = 4, so the correct bra size is 36DD.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but after checking it myself, I need to go bra shopping.

Finding the Right Kids’ Clothes

November 8, 2007 | Leave a Comment

We know kids - especially girls - are growing up a little too quick these days. I mean it. Picture this: eight-year-olds in mini-skirts and skin-tight shirts, trying to look grown up and sexy. What is that’s causing them to grow up so quickly?

1. Friends, especially those with older siblings. Girls see the way others are dressed, and they want to look that way, too. Girls want to look older. Until they hit somewhere between 21 and 30 that is, when there’s a frantic desire to look younger. Children see what’s cool, and what’s hot, and they want that, too.

2. Teen/adult/celebrity “role models.” Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff, Vanessa Hudgens… really, anyone in the spotlight. They’re “cool” and pretty, and everyone wants to be cool - and pretty.

3. Toys. Once upon a time, there were Barbies. Now there are Bratz. Barbie had goals and careers. The only thing Bratz are set to do is climb a stripper’s pole. And that’s a toy being marketed to children. Girls see what Bratz are wearing, and that’s what they want to wear, too.

Here are some tips to helping your kids look cute, “cool”, and fashionable without breaking the budget or having other parents ban her from their house.

1. Dresses and skirts are fine, but try to keep them about knee length, or have them layer it with leggings. Leggings and layers are “in.” Try Children’s Place or Gap Kids, which have dresses, including “Sweater Dresses,” which are perfect for leggings for only $20-30.

2. Denim is everywhere. Children’s Place has jeans for $15 for girls and boys, and Navy Pier has some nice jeans, too. Make sure they’re not baggy or skintight, and that they don’t drag on the ground.

3. Khakis are a good addition to any wardrobe, because they can be worn for semi-formal occasions, too. (Dark khakis are in, light khakis are waaaay out, and colored khakis could be fun, too.) Try Children’s place.

4. Cute tops and sweaters. Again, layering is in, and long shirts, with pastels and prints and then, long shirts can be over and under the shorter shirts. Navy Pier, and Gap Kids are good places to look. Don’t forget sweaters!

Use Your Clothing To Make a Statement

September 5, 2007 | Leave a Comment

jeans_2.jpgWhen you want to make a fashion statement, the color of your clothes is just as important to consider as anything else about them. Color can capture people’s attention and can even subtly alter a mood, if you wish. For example, if you’re doing a job interview, a presentation, or attending a party, the color of what you were can make a difference. In some instances, it can even make a lasting difference.

When you first go on a date, meet a client, or apply for a job you really want, the color of what you’re wearing can send out signals that say something about you to the people you’re with. What you’re wearing can tell people about you before you even open your mouth. For example, certain colors bring out specific emotions in people, and this can have the advantage of helping or hurting you, depending on how the colors affect other people.

Simply put, colors can create an impression that can make other people feel a given way. Medical researchers have even tested subjects as they view a variety of clothing colors and have seen how this has affected their body temperatures, blood pressure and hormone levels, for example. It has been proven that color can have a most definitive positive or negative effect. The clothing they wear can drastically alter wearers’ emotions, self-esteem, personality, and appearance.

If you’re looking to update your wardrobe, look for shades that are appropriate to match your age as well as your hair, skin and eye color. More temporary characteristics that will influence your clothing that will change can include the type of weather, specific occasion, personal tastes, mood, et cetera.

Sometimes, what you wear can also affect how people perceive you and your intentions. For example, if you wear a red jacket with a white shirt to a job interview, this can mean that you are self-confident and in control. However, if you wear that same red jacket with a lacy black frilly top, this may be distracting, to say the least, and will perhaps look unprofessional.

If you want to find a way to send off the right message or make a positive statement, do some research on what different colors mean to people in general. For example, the color red is a good example. Blue-based reds generally signify intellectual power and femininity. If the red is yellow-based, it is associated with energy; it may be a good color to wear on a first or second date if you’re a woman looking to impress a man. Red lipstick can signify power and authority.

Purple is a color that’s typically associated with royalty. It also influences creativity. It can awaken the senses and can make people very passionate. If you need to help your best friend with a problem, wear a turquoise blouse. This places other women at ease and will help promote conversation. If you’re attending a meeting with coworkers or clients, wearing a brown suit can make you non threatening and make you seem reliable and supportive.

Wear Blue Without Feeling Blue

August 30, 2007 | 2 Comments

blue.jpgWith Christmas a distant prospect, September is the start of all things new in the retail fashion calendar. The sales have ended and stores look clean and fresh, showcasing their complete new season collections. Moss suggests a little retail therapy could be the very cure to beat the BLUES.

With the colour blue associated with: knowledge, relaxation and health and the physical effects of being around or wearing blue, noted as being calming, lowering blood pressure, decreases respiration, enhances communication and decision-making, these are all handy skills to have in a busy working environment.

For this Autumn/Winter 07 the Moss collections embrace the naturally dark and somber colours of the winter season, injecting them with new life by using accents of richer or vibrantly burnt colours from the autumn pallet and textured luxurious fabrics and yarns. Highlighted themes for the season are “Platinum,” “Everyday Luxury,” and “Black and white, ” with the first being “Back to work Blues.”

Is blue your favourite colour? Do you shy away from the shades of night or do you love to get yourself into them?

What makes a man look hot to women

August 24, 2007 | Leave a Comment

np-2.jpgNo doubt an interesting title to you guys who want to know what women are after? Quite possibly interesting to women too because they want to know what to look for in a man. The “hot or not” topic is one that has been burning since the dawn of human-kind, and it can now be answered.

Some women say jeans, some say Hugo Boss, some say nothing but a smile and attitude. The key here is that it really comes down to compatibility of taste, in some ways it is a lot like Marmite… you either love it or you want to spit it out and stamp on it.

Often women want their men sharp, clean cut and well dressed. There are even songs about such a style. This includes uniforms (can anyone say Richard Gere?) and official clothing as well as the every day business suits and crisp night clubbing wear.

Other times women are looking for the “homely” type of guy. A man that is not so caught up in his own image that he has to wear the latest brands, the hottest scents, or even worry about letting an Iron attack his shirt at point blank range. The ladies can see that because of this ‘no worry’ attitude toward clothing that you guys who dress this way should be more interesting as a person. Obviously this does not give you the porogative to give up on the essentials such as bathing or smelling nice, but it does mean you can put on a plain jumper and jeans without worrying.

There are really only 4 things that you as a guy should do - regardless of your style - in order to ‘look hot’ to the right type of woman for you.

  1. Get a good hair cut and keep it maintained
  2. Be hygenic. So do wash, cut your nails and brush your teeth etc
  3. Wear the clothes you want… that means don’t be naked in public!
  4. Be casual, don’t wear clothes that simply don’t suit your personality

Think about how you look at women and what attracts you to them. Specifically think about what ‘type’ of woman you get attracted to. Is it the cute innocent ‘geek chic’ type? Perhaps the drop dead hot model from the magazines? The short skirt with hips that like R&B? Or is it the “I would look great and really enjoy living in a farm house like The Good Life” appeal that gets you going?

Whatever it is that attracts men to women and women to men, the primary factor to keep in mind at all times is that “types” are attracted to each other. If you don’t both fit into each others “type”, then it is unlikely that you will get into a mutual relationship. Yes, this is why everyone has a “hot” and an “ugly” friend.
