Are “Jelly Shoes” Back?
January 7, 2008 | Filed Under Designer Fashion, Latest Fashion

When I was little, I cajoled my mother into buying me jelly shoes. I loved them. I thought they were amazing and cute and, if I recall correctly, they sparkled a bit. Mom wasn’t thrilled with the idea, but I did need shoes, so I got my jelly shoes. Though I was horribly disappointed when they stopped making the pretty sparkly kind, nothing is more horrifying than this: they’re back, and they’re by Marc Jacobs.
Shopping several months ago for shoes for my roommate (she was trying on shoes, I was criticizing most of them), we noticed that they seemed to be lining a few too many walls. Before, they were soft plastic, designed for children and teens. Now, they’re hard plastic, designed for grown women.
And they’re uglier than they were before (I’m sticking with that, even though I was about 6 when those were popular last time and I would die before buying them again). They’re like crocs, but they’re not as ugly, and they look less comfortable than people claim crocs are (I’m not buying it).

The problem is this: for some reason, they’re supposed to be something people who are mature and adult like and would wear. One word: traumatic. What are they thinking?
