Finding the Perfect Holiday Hair

November 30, 2007 | 1 Comment

Natalie Portman

Looking for a change for the holidays? Try a haircut. Model after the celebs with some current hairstyle trends.

Or you could do something like Hayden did, with a medium braid through the hair. Notice how it pulls her hair back? Or, still on braids, if you want to have some wisps hanging down, to frame your face or for whatever other reason, you can try the Mary-Kate style, with the braid across the head, and the rest of the hair in an updo (see below). The braids are a quick way to change your style and make it look special.

You could go the curly route, like Beyonce or Sarah Jessica Parker, or try the big sausage curls - a very romantic look like what Natalie Portman has. I love the big sausage curls. They come to my little sister naturally. Others like my sister could make an easy change by simply straightening her hair.

Messy updos après Eva Longoria are very pretty and chic, and don’t require a lot of time. The bob is also coming back into style, like Victoria Beckham, Paris Hilton and Anne Hathaway’s new cut.

For the men, the five o’clock shadow is a nice touch, and product is also good - but don’t use too much! The shadow offers a degree of mystery, and for those who wear it well, it’s a very charming rugged look.

As far as cut’s go, clean cuts are in, but not entirely clean - go for something a little crazy, and not necessarily straight. You can try a longer cut, like what Patrick Dempsey has and then style it up. You can also try something short, like a crewcut like David Beckham’s and add a little bang in front - which can also be styled. My boyfriend’s stylist tried that on him recently, and now that I’m used to it, I really like it. It gives him a little length, without it being too long for him.

Project Runway Surprise Appearance: Carrie Bradshaw

Project Runway “Bitten” Dress

Sarah Jessica Parker, aka Carrie Bradshaw made an appearance (surprise) on Project Runway as a judge. I don’t know about you, but I’m thinking that was nerve-wrecking. The show, which challenges the designers to remember that, in fashion, “one day you’re in, and the next you’re out.” I think Sarah helped bring that back into perspective.

This week, only one person didn’t receive tons of criticism: Victorya Hong with her dress and vest combination. In fact, for Sarah, it was love at first sight, and it’s already part of her “Bitten” collection at Steve and Barry’s (which also has Amanda Bynes‘ and Venus Williams’ clothing lines).

The dress is on sale for $19.98, and the vest for $14.98. Gotta love those prices!

Fashion Trend: Gloves Are In!

Victoria Beckham wearing long gloves
Okay, women, do you remember those short white gloves that you had to wear for your friend’s wedding, and then stuck in the very deepest recesses of your closet - only not getting rid of them because you would have felt bad? Or those long, black gloves you wore to prom?

Well, now you can wear them - and be in style, because gloves are stylish like they haven’t been since the 1950’s. Good news, right?

Victoria Beckham, who is always the height of style, first models her hot boots and now her hot gloves. And they are hot! If you threw out those bridal gloves, they’re on sale for only $10 almost everywhere. If you’re looking for something new, you can try driving gloves, which are short and black - a boyish look for bad girls. Long gloves are also in - they offer warmth and style! These can be colored, chunky, or thin… this season, anything goes.

The New Face of Miu Miu: Kirsten Dunst

Kirsten Dunst

Best known for her amazing job as a “Mary Jane” in Spiderman, Kirsten Dunst has taken on a new role:  modeling for Miu Miu. Kirsten is replacing Lindsay Lohan, who did the Spring/Summer 2007 ad campaigns, and she will star in the Spring/Summer 2008 advertisements.

Miucci Prada has long been known to promote her brand using beautiful female celebrities - and Kirsten is just one more to do that. One source confirms that “Kirsten just wrapped a photoshoot for Miu Miu’s new range in Los Angelos with fashion photographers Mert and Marcus.”

Ideally, Kirsten’s face will help promote the brand’s growth in the U.S. as new boutiques are opening in New York and Los Angelos.

Men and Women’s Fashion Accessory: The Scarf

Man in scarf

Scarves are easily one of my favorite fashion accessories - for both women and men. Like anything else, scarves have a wide range of prices from expensive, to very inexpensive, and they can be worn to keep you warm, with a coat, or completely separately, to add some color, or just to look nice. Scarves are quickly becoming an important fashion accessory for men and women alike. They have been worn for centuries, in all different countries, in all different styles, for all different reasons. Amazing that they’re still hot now.

The rule for wearing scarves:

It should compliment the rest of what you’re wearing, but it doesn’t need to match exactly. I once bought a matching shirt and scarf combination. It was a bad, bad idea - I looked like I was trying to be a chameleon. Fortunately, they can be worn separately.

Instead, it’s better to use a scarf to accent certain colors. For instance, this $98 green men’s scarf can be worn with a green shirt in a different shade, or to emphasize green stripes or pattern in another shirt.

Scarves can also serve to add color to something that might not otherwise have much of it. This $20 pink and women’s scarf is nice because the dual colors give it a different look and feel, which could look great with white, black, brown, and even some shades of gray. Men’s scarves can also have more than one color, and that is actually very trendy.

Here are two of several ways for women to wear them as accessories:

  1. The long tie: For this, you need a rectangular scarf, and then, you put it around your neck, with one end hanging down longer than the other. Then, tie the longer end in a not around the shorter, and pull the short end until you have it the length you want. This is a soft, feminine look appropriate for almost any occasion.
  2. The double flip: Probably the easiest, and still very classy. Again, with a rectangular scarf, put it around your neck, with one end hanging down further than the other, and wrap the other end around your neck a second time, and simply let it hang down. Like in this picture.

The double flipHere are two of several ways for men to wear scarves as accessories:

  1. Wrap it around your neck, and leave one end around you shoulder (or you can bring it forward like in the woman’s option).
  2. The Italian Loop: Fold the rectangular scarf in half, and put it around your neck, pulling the loose ends through the loop, and tighten it as you like. This is elegant and warm, and very European.

Jessica Simpson recently finished her self-named clothing line, which is available at Macy’s stores. The Jessica Simpson collection includes accessories like handbags, some shoes, boots, jeans, jackets and hair extensions (she wants everyone to look just like her). It’s been said that Jessica lives, sleeps and breathes fashion… and now she’s sharing her style with the rest of the world.

What Are You Wearing?

November 27, 2007 | Leave a Comment

Have you ever looked a friend or family member and thought to yourself: “What is he/she wearing and who let him/her out of the house?”

Fashion these days sometimes takes a turn for the worse. Here are some examples of fashion gone bad. And by bad, I mean really bad. The results are a little bit funny.

Let’s take a look at Alicia Keys. Skirts over leggings or even pants are in, but I wouldn’t suggest this to anyone. I don’t even know what it is:

And here’s Carrie Underwood. Eek!

Fergie frequently chooses some interesting clothing:

And to not leave out the men, here’s Ashton Kutcher:

On the other hand, leggings, short skirts, long shirts (short dresses?) are coming back in… and there are plenty of ways to wear them… good and bad.

The Right Clothes Don’t Make A Man, But They Help!

They say that behind every great man, there is a great woman. True or not, men do have a way of “cleaning up” a bit when they’re with a woman who will tell him how to dress, or whom he wants to impress. Most of them do, anyway.

Let’s take a quick look at a Mr. Ashton Kutcher as an example. This is Ashton a year ago (eek!):

Ashton Kutcher

And this is Ashton a few months ago, after (wife) Demi Moore changed her last name to his. Quite a change, isn’t it? I mean, he matches!

Ashton Kutcher with Demi Moore

Of course, some celebrities, like Terrence Howard, just have a knack for looking good in almost anything. And Terrence knows how to accessorize… with his nice hat(s) and all… amazing.

So a lesson from the Celebs: accessories are just as important for men as for women. And so is matching.

Alice + Olivia: Coming To A Payless Near You

November 26, 2007 | 3 Comments

Alice + Olivia designer Stacey Bendet

How many times when watching a television show, have you thought, “Wow, I wish I could get that! I would look totally hot!” And then, the bubble burst, reality kicked in, and you realized you couldn’t afford it in a million years? The good news, is that things are changing.

With celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Amanda Bynes, and Venus Williams making stylish fashion affordable to the public at large, it’s easy to afford celebrity brands. Designer brands have also become easier to emulate, with H&M offering Cavalli, Gucci, Valentino, and Channel-type clothing (like what’s seen on Gossip Girls).

Designer Stacey Bendet whose design name is “Alice + Olivia” designs clothing, and made her name with pants, which are affectionately sells pants called the Stacey Pants. Stacey’s clothing has been worn by Kate Hudson and Paris and Nicky Hilton , so it’s clear she knows what she’s doing.

Now, Stacey has produced of Alice + Olivia shoes - and they’re going directly to Payless. The best part is that nothing will be over $40!

Does that sound to good to be true? This spring line is designed just for Payless, and Stacey says that they’re “imaginative” a bit like an Alice In Wonderland sequence. The line contains all kinds of shoes. Unfortunately, as the website (aliceandolivia.com) isn’t quite up yet, finding pictures is difficult, so you’ll have to use your imagination for some of this. The shoes will be available in Spring of 2008.

The shoe line includes a green patent leather shoe - tennis shoe style.

polka dot Alice + Olivia shoesThe line also includes the all-important flats, which Stacey predicts will be around for awhile. Like in the picture below, these flats have polka dots on them, and some have the flowery-type deal, as well, and they’re available in two or three different colors. Stacey said she included the polka dots in her Alice + Olivia shoes because they look cute in clothing, and she though it would be nice. There’s also a sparkly gold flat. These are only $30!

The line also includes some platforms. They’re very retro, with bright, seventies colors.

Look for this line - it’s coming soon!

Try Them Both On: Color Makes A Difference

Pink JC Penny Lace Shirt

Have you ever had the problem of trying on two pairs of pants, two shirts, or whatever that are exactly the same, except for the color? I mean, you loved the shirt, and you want it, but the first color just was NOT up to par, and looked awful, so you bypassed the shirt all together? Next time, get the shirt in the other color - all three colors - that you’re considering. Sometimes, the color really does make all the difference in the world.

Brown JC Penny Lace Shirt

I always forget that. Yesterday, while I was getting ready for the all-important Thanksgiving meal, I had on a shirt that I bought especially for Thanksgiving. And I hated it. Changed my pants. Worse. The color was wrong, I didn’t like the fit, I didn’t like the shape… anything that could be wrong, was wrong.

Purple JC Penny lace shirt

Finally, in desperation (after texts of complaint to my roommate who was miles away with her family), I picked up the other shirt that I bought - which was exactly the same, except for the color: same size, same cut, same shape, same fit, and a “miracle” happened. It fit perfectly.

Gray JC Penny Polo

The color was good, the shape was great, the fit was wonderful, and I didn’t even notice the cut. There was also the small voice of my roommate, telling me to buy both: both colors are good on me, and I could wear one for Thanksgiving, one for Christmas. They were both fine in the store, but yesterday, yesterday it was the red that won out… the turquoise just didn’t cut it. So I’m glad I had both, or I would have been miserable.

Another thing to try when you love a shirt, or pants or whatever, but they’re not quite perfect, is to get another size. Sometimes, going down a size, instead of up a size, makes all the difference in the world. Of course, sometimes it’s just not meant to be.
